Lupus Awareness Month 2026 Campaign

The Reality of Lupus in Canada: A Call for Better Care and Understanding

Lupus is a complex autoimmune disease that can affect any organ, in any person, at any time.

Often called “The Disease of 1000 Faces,” lupus presents differently in every individual, making it difficult to recognize, diagnose, and treat. There is no single definitive test, and many Canadians face months or even years of uncertainty before receiving answers.

The Reality of Living with Lupus

For many Canadians, lupus is not occasional — it is daily.

  • 52% experience pain, swelling, or joint stiffness on a daily or near-daily basis
  • 61% report persistent fatigue that impacts their ability to function
  • 44% experience frequent headaches
  • Patients report a 52% loss in their ability to carry out daily activities
  • 73% have had to make changes to their employment due to lupus

“I have 10 doctors because lupus affects my heart, my spleen, and my blood levels. It’s hard to manage, and it’s very frustrating because you get no answers.”
– Laura Louis, British Columbia

“Some days, I am so exhausted and in so much pain that getting out of bed seems impossible.”
– Macenzie, Ontario

The Impact of Lupus in Canada

Every day, Canadians living with lupus navigate a reality that is often invisible, unpredictable, and deeply disruptive.

Lupus can lead to long-term and irreversible organ damage. The cause of the disease remains unknown, and there is currently no cure.

Even with treatment, many patients continue to struggle: 85.4% experienced at least one flare in the past year.

Flares can disrupt daily life, delay progress, and create ongoing uncertainty.

“A lot of people are misinformed and don’t understand lupus, and I want people to be informed.”
– Danielle, Quebec

Without greater awareness, patients face delays in diagnosis, barriers to care, and a lack of support.

This Lupus Awareness Month, we are calling for:

  • Greater understanding of the realities of lupus in Canada
  • More equitable access to care and treatment
  • Continued investment in research and innovation
