Lupus and children

Lupus is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation in one or more parts of the body. More than 1 in 1,000 Canadians have lupus, and it can affect anyONE, including children, anyORGAN, anyTIME. Childhood-onset lupus, affecting 10-20% of diagnosed individuals, can be severe. Unlike adult-onset lupus, it often tragets the kidneys and can have significant long-term impact. Unfortunately, lupus tends to be more aggresive and severe in children than in adults [1].

How lupus may affect your child’s activities

Your child might be feeling tired and in pain, making it difficult for them to participate in their usual activities. Sometimes, they may not feel up to attending school or socializing with friends.

How lupus may affect your child’s school life

Your child might have to miss quite a bit of school due to doctors’ appointments, illness or being hospitalized. They might have a hard time keeping up with school work or school activities. It is very important to inform the school about your child’s illness and work together to put in place the proper accomodations for your child. This will hopefully reduce some of the stress while navigating this challenging time. Your child’s specialist can write a letter or contact the school if needed.

How lupus may affect the whole family

When a child receives a lupus diagnosis, it can be a daunting time for the whole family. The unpredictable nature of the disease can cause stress and emotions like guilt and fear to arise. Your child may struggle with feelings of depression and uncertainty. Seeking support from a counsellor or your child’s doctor can provide guidance and ideas to help navigate these challenges. Social workers can assist in adapting to new situations and setting achievable goals for your child and family. Maintaining daily routines can offer comfort and stability for your child, minimizing the impact of the disease on their lives. If unsure about your child’s capabilities, consult with a member of the healthcare team for assistance.
