Lupus Canada Announces New Ambassador – Canadian Golfer Salimah Mussani

In the Fall 2007 Lupus Canada newsletter, Salimah Mussani shared her story of living with lupus and her interest and eagerness to work with Lupus Canada as an Ambassador.

This year has been a great year for Salimah and her golf career, but she has also had challenges living with lupus. She placed 3rd at the El Paso Golf Classic, 4th at the Lakeland Duramed FUTURES tournament, and won the 2007 Canadian PGA Women’s Championship in August. But like many people living with lupus, she has had to withdraw from tournaments or golf early or late in the day in order to avoid the sun. What’s inspiring about Salimah and her life experiences is her desire to go after her dreams and maintain a positive outlook on life. She feels especially eager to work with other young people, as she herself was diagnosed with lupus at a young age. We look forward to working with Salimah.

Walk a Block for Lupus 2007 – A huge success

walk a block for lupusThis year Lupus Canada set a fundraising goal of $300,000- possibly a steep goal considering the 2006 Walk raised just over $140,000 - but it was the dedication and excitement of team leaders, walkers and local communities that made us think 2007 would be a big year. And sure enough, the 2007 Walk a Block was the best year ever. With over 80 Walks happening across Canada and thousands of Walkers, Team Leaders, volunteers and supports, we raised funds, awareness and support for people with lupus. Congratulations to all the Walks and the thousands of people who participated in the event – we are that much closer to finding a cure for lupus. Please visit the Lupus Canada website in early 2008 to learn about our next Walk a Block.

Get In The Loop – Lupus Canada Youth Newsletter celebrates a full year with 5 exciting editions

Co-editors Charlene Johnson and Frances Olimpo had a desire to start up a youth newsletter that was created by, and directed to, young people living with lupus. There had been newsletters in the past such as the very successful " TLC (taking life as a challenge) Megazine", but there wasn’t a newsletter available in the last couple of years. After attending the Lupus Canada youth meeting in June 2005 and meeting other young women coping with lupus, it became clear to Charlene that young people needed a forum to connect, and a resource to share helpful life tips. “I realized that having a newsletter would allow us all to stay connected no matter how far apart we are living from each other” Charlene said. Charlene set to work, and has recruited Frances and several young writers to share their stories and experiences. Now with 5 editions completed, Charlene and Frances continue to look for new ideas and stories to include, and ways to keep people connected. Their latest effort has led Charlene and Frances to set up a Facebook group – appropriately named “Get In The Loop” where readers can stay up to date on the latest topics and chat with each other.

Light Bulb Issue Heating Up in Canada

In the recent edition of the Lupus Canada Bulletin, an article explored the issue of Compact Fluorescent Lighting, and how these bulbs are starting to replace the traditional incandescent lighting. There are good things about the bulbs – they are more energy efficient and last longer. But there are also negatives about the bulbs too. Many people with lupus find fluorescent lighting hard to manage, some even find that exposure to fluorescent lighting increases lupus symptoms.
