Rheumatologist and Lupus Researcher awarded the 1st ever Sally Drummond Lecture Award
On May 31st, 2008 in Montreal, Quebec, Dr. John Hanly became the first ever recipient of the Sally Drummond Award. The award was a collaborative effort between the staff at the Montreal General Hospital, the Drummond family, and the Singer Family Fund for Lupus Research to honour her contribution and commitment to lupus education and awareness. The award allowed Lupus Canada to invite Dr. Hanly to present at the Living Well with Lupus Symposium. Dr. Hanly offered an informative presentation on Lupus and the Nervous System, with specific focus on research being done in that area.
Lupus Canada and CaNIOS would like to congratulate Dr. Hanly on this award.

It also allowed lupus patients to ask questions that have been boggling their minds.
A special thanks goes to the doctors and researchers who took the time to attend the event:
- Dr. Paul R. Fortin (Rheumatologist from Toronto)
- Dr. Deborah Da Costa (Psychologist from Montreal)
- Dr. Christine Peschken(Rheumatologist from Winnipeg)
- Dr. Joan Wither (Basic Scientist, Immunologist, Rheumatologist from Toronto)
- Dr. Lori Tucker (Pediatric Rheumatologist from Vancouver)
With over 100 people in attendance, the event was considered a huge success. Lupus Canada and CaNIOS look forward to holding this event again in the future. Some of the questions from the Café Scientifique have been published in CaNIOS’ In Touch magazine, available at www.canios.ca.

Walk a Block for Lupus 2008-A New Day Brings Big Results
Walk a Block for Lupus found a new date this year, taking place on May 10th to correlate with World Lupus Day. Everyone worked exceptionally hard, pulled together, and most importantly had a lot of fun. While the funds are still coming in, to date we have raised over $110,000 and that’s just online!

This year’s Walk a Block had a special incentive for individuals who registered online. Thanks to our wonderful corporate sponsors, WestJet and Delta Hotels, we were able to offer participants who registered online the opportunity to be entered into a draw to win great prizes! The top twenty online fundraisers were entered into a draw and two winners were selected for our first ever online prize giveaway.
