Applying For Benefits Or Services
The following suggestions can help you with the application process and ensure that your application will move through as quickly and smoothly as possible:
If you deal with a specific person in the office, get their name and title. It can be helpful to have someone to contact later in the process. |
Get as much information as you can about the benefit or service for which you are applying. Ask if there are any brochures or booklets. |
Don't hesitate to ask about eligibility requirements and criteria. This is information you are entitled to have. If they are not clear, insist on an explanation. |
Be sure to get all the forms you need from the agency. |
If a form is unclear or hard to understand, don't hesitate to ask questions. Answering them is part of the employee's job. |
Ask if any additional documentation will be needed. |
Ask about deadlines for applying. Make sure you can get all documentation in time. |
Ask when and how you will get a reply. |
Follow up your application with a phone call and, if necessary, correspondence, to prevent the paperwork from getting buried in what is often an agency's overwhelming volume of applications. |
Keep a record of all communications with the office. Make a note of the time and subject matter of all meetings and telephone calls. If you leave a message, make a note of that too. |
Record any decisions or agreements that were made. |
Keep all letters received, and copies of all letters sent. |
If your application is rejected, find out the reason, and ask if there is an appeal process. There usually is. |
